Showcase: Nokia

Role:

Manager of Creative Services

Duties:

Deep in Silicon Valley, there was a team of marketers tasked with elevating the deep technology and research of the Nokia Research Center’s (NRC) global labs. I was hired to give the labs a visual presence that reflected our innovative nature yet stayed true to our core master brand. I then had to take all the crazy research coming from around the globe and give it a face through presentations, videos, white papers, and events to showcase the now, next and future innovations in development.

Global Brand & Identity

To Most, it’s science fiction… To us, it’s just science.

My journey at Nokia began by reimagining the Nokia Research Center’s sub-brand while keeping in sync with Nokia’s master brand. I took notes from inspiration provided by the core brand but created a scaleable graphical treatment that spoke to the underlying scientific principles of our research as well the three tenets of our research objectives: to Explore, Solve & Deliver. I used this framework to define a design system and brand structure used across all of our communications, demos, and Marketing collateral that told the world what we did and why we were doing it. Here are some examples of the types of deliverables I crafted over my 5 years at Nokia.

  • Define Core Brand Concept

  • Establish Brand Standards/Guidelines

  • Creation of Assets & Templates

  • Video Stingers & Brand Standards

  • Research Center Location Lockup Treatments

  • Workspace & Facilities Signage/Branding

  • Brand Governance for Employees & Vendors

  • Brand Workshops for Usage & Collaboration

Interactive Demo System & Video

Codename ‘LAVA’, my team’s own innovation allowed us to share demos created for regional teams via a custom shared/networked system. Built on a Flash framework and run through an Air player, networked systems received distributed updates via a core XML data source. I created an admin interface that allowed users to create custom playlists, and filter screens to allow filtering demos based on locations, technology timing and internal research categories. This was a highly successful project promoted by the CTO and hailed as one of my major accomplishments during my time at Nokia.

I was also responsible for creating dozens of videos, demos, presentations and other marketing collateral that helped showcase the innovations coming from each regional research center.
